Christine Carpenter

Christine M. Carpenter, age 98, passed away Friday, February 3rd, 2023 at her home in Clintwood, Va. A beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend; the memories with-and-of her shall always be filled with the presence of her grace, kindness, and most importantly her love. Born in Hawkins County, Tn. to Callie G. McLain and Samuel McLain; Christine grew up near Rogersville, Tn until the age of 7, when her father passed. As her relatives at the time sought employment in mining coal, she moved with her family to Dante, Va then on to Clinchco, Va; where jobs were abundant at that time. While attending Clinchco High School, she met her to-be husband, William “Bill” Carpenter who worked at the town’s company store. After they were married in 1941, she and Bill (a US Army service member) had plans of settling down and raising a family, yet… the Second Great War had different plans for many families at the time. When World War II broke out she remained in Clintwood, Va along with her mother, while Bill carried out his service time overseas. After Bill returned from the war, they raised three sons together - Phil L. Carpenter (Charlene), Conover, NC, John M. Carpenter (Charlotte), Clintwood, VA, and Gary D. Carpenter (Debbie),Kennesaw, GA. Upon her graduation in the spring of 1940, she worked for the US Department of Agriculture as the manager of the ASCS office in Clintwood Va. After her retirement in March of 1979, she began her most favored career as a loving grandmother to four grandchildren - Sarah C. Williams (John), Dana C. Hughes (Cal), Nathan M. Carpenter (Robin), and Kayla C. Sanders (Alan) - along with five great grandchildren - Elijah Williams, Layla Williams, Madison Sanders, Reid Carpenter, and Mason Sanders. Christine was able to live and stay at home throughout her lifetime. While the family spread its wings and broadened out to farther places and states, for any that spoke to her knew that she was immensely proud of her family. Her greatest treasure throughout her years was that she always enjoyed having all of them united once again; to be together at her house for a holiday, a warm and comforting meal, or just an afternoon sharing stories together while working a crossword puzzle and guessing answers to the latest episodes of Jeopardy and the Wheel of Fortune; or if one was fortunate for a warmer day to relax together on her grandmother's antique porch swing counting the birds as they stole a bite of seed and shared with you their songs and company. Christine had faith in her Lord and Savior and reaffirmed that faith to her family and friends. Her precious memory will be cherished, and live on through her family which she loved so dearly. Christine was preceded in death by her parents, Callie and Samuel McLain; her husband, Bill Carpenter; and great grandson, Julian J. Williams. Christine was well known in her community. In her recent years she was blessed with a loving team of special caregivers who she and her family cherished. The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 07, 2023 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. where a Celebration of Life service will start at 1:00pm at Mullins Funeral Home Chapel with Clergymen Lester Mullins and R. J. Rose. Burial will follow in the Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood, Virginia. Pallbearers: John Williams, Nathan Carpenter, Cal Hughes, Alan Sanders, Elijah Williams and L.C. (Butch) Noe In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Flemingtown Freewill Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Coeburn, and Clintwood Baptist Church.
